This week's offerings
The weather is finally catching up with the calendar and our summer crops are in and beginning to take off. Not long before we have our first green beans and tomatoes, with summer squash almost here. For the time being, we have some great romaine lettuce and some truly nice broccoli among our other offerings.

We have added some very nice red cabbage to the list this week. It is very sweet and makes wonderful coleslaw with the added antioxidants and vitamins of a red cabbage variety. Have a great week!

Sorry for the late update. We have a training session here this week and I have been a little preoccupied, but ordering is open for Wednesday pick-ups and we have some really nice lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower this week.
This week’s fare includes the addition of our first cauliflower of the season. We waited a long time for this and it is worth the wait. Nice, flavorful heads.
Also, check out the tomato plants we have to offer. I also have a few extra eggplant and hungarian wax peppers (not listed, but you can get them when you pick up.)

The broccoli is finally here, and wow, is it nice. Cool, slow growing conditions have allowed it to develop some great mineral content and wonderful sweetness.
Lots of lettuce and kale this week, too.
I don’t need to tell you that it has been a rough winter for vegetable farmers here in Calhoun County, but we are back in the produce business with some very nice lettuce varieties, some early spring kale, and a few heads of small but tasty broccoli.
Soil temperatures are still quite cool for this time of year and that means a slower than normal start for the warm season veggies, but we have a good variety of things in the ground and are holding lots of transplants in the propagation house until the soil is a consistent 62 degrees.
I don’t have them listed on the store site, but I have lots of tomato plants ready to go, so if you want to “grow your own” I will have them available when you pick up your orders. We have some great heirloom varieties including the local favorite “Hillbilly.” We also have Mr. Stripey, Brandywine, Rutgers, Yellow Jubilee, Old German, Amish Paste and a few Jersey Giants. The plants are in great condition and we are only asking $4 for a large six-pack.
We hope to see you soon, and remember that we are also at the Calhoun County Farmer’s Market at the Upper West Fork Park on Wednesdays from 9 to 1.
Limited offerings this week
It has been quite a season trying to keep the fresh goods coming to you all, but we have finally reached the point where demand from our weekly customers at the Farmers Market, the Clay and Calhoun School Districts and those of you that have so faithfully ordered online have bought us out of our fresh offerings from the garden.
You will notice a much shorter availability list this week, but we still have potatoes, some wonderful winter squashes and dried pepper along with all of Lynnita’s wonderful baked goods.
We are seeding now for an early start for more good green stuff, but depending on how the weather cooperates it will likely be about 4 to six weeks before we have the fresh stuff again.
Thanks to all of you that have brought our shortage about by being such good customers! We truly appreciate you.
Post Polar Vortex Produce!
We finally thawed enough to pull some of the covers off our low tunnels and I am very pleased to share that I found some beautiful crops still growing! Even the red leaf lettuce came through and we are back in business for you this week.
Jan. 8 Market update
I just wanted to update you about our availability for Wednesday’s pick ups. Like most of you, we had -6 degrees last night, and although that won’t be a problem for some of our produce in the long run, it does mean that we won’t be able to harvest for tomorrow.
The fabric on our low tunnels is too brittle to try and move, and the ground is frozen too deep to get the root crops out without damage. Even the kale leaves would shatter if we tried to pick it.
The good news is that when things thaw out we will be back in business and the hardy crops we have will bounce right back. The only permanent loss we will have is the lettuce. It holds up to about 5 degrees, but the -6 last night was just too much for it.
