Hi Folks,

“Well, that’s farming” Is a statement that we just need to accept from time to time. Friday night’s flash flooding hit us pretty hard here with the highest water we have seen on Hardway Run since 2009. Our infrastructure and gardens near the building are fine, but our upper field took a heavy hit with water flowing through three of our 5 foot by 250 foot beds and washing out most of our green beans and corn. The loss of crop hurts, but the topsoil was washed away too at a depth of more than 10". The crops can be replanted in the majority of the field that was unaffected, but the loss of soil is a resource that cannot be easily replaced. Regardless, we are thankful for what we do have and grateful that we have the capacity to carry on with only minor inconvenience. One of our food security strategies is to plant multiple varieties of crops to protect against disease and pests, and we also plant similar crops in multiple locations, anticipating just such an event. We will still have beans and corn this year.

Blessings,
Bob
